Lorna Rivera, Co-Chair of the WE LEARN Board, welcomes participants and opens the conference.

Mev Miller, Founder & Coordinator of WE LEARN, offers a brief history and the vision of WE LEARN and introduces keynote speaker, Barbara Neely.

Barbara Neely, writer and activist, gave the keynote address. Click here to view excerpts.

The First Annual WE LEARN Conference was attended by close to 100 people from New England and mid-Atlantic states. 10% of the attendees were adult women learners.

WE LEARN exhibited women-centered adult basic reading and curriculum materials. This display offered a hands-on look at some of the resource materials listed on the Resources page of the WE LEARN website. (www.litwomen.org/Resources.html)

Silja Kallenbach presented information on writing for The Change Agent: Adult Education for Social Justice and offered useful activities focused on how to use the paper with learners.

Presenters Anna Yangco and Char Caver welcomed participants into their workshop by replicating the healing and supportive atmosphere they create at Project Hope in Dorchester MA. Students from Project Hope also spoke about their experiences with learning, providing moving experiences for workshop participants.

Elsa Auerbach worked with teachers and learners on participatory methods to facilitate student writing.

Mev Miller provided a tour of the WE LEARN website at the Clark Technology Center. Participants then did some hands on activities to use the website.

Students learned and discussed some helpful writing tips from Sally Gabb.

Students & teachers from several programs attended together. Claudia Vierra (student), Richard Goldberg (teacher) and Mabel Yeung (student) are from Asian American Civic Association (AACE) in Boston, MA.

Members enthusiastically offered their ideas for the future of WE LEARN. Click here for the membership meeting minutes.

We couldn't have done it without our volunteers: Cathi Murray, Val Flaherty, and Cheryl Monahan.

The newly elected (and post-conference relieved) WE LEARN Board:

Anna Yangco, Alison Cunningham, Nancy Howard (Co-Chair), Lorna Rivera (Co-Chair), Sally Gabb (Treasurer), Mev Miller (Founder, Coordinator & Ex Officio) and Dana Huber (Secretary).
