LEARN Directory - Member Programs
This
is a listing of WE LEARN member programs offering
adult literacy/basic education services to women. In most cases,
these programs are "women-focused" because they do one
or more of the following: a) enrolls only women; OR b) articulates
a mission or vision focused directly on addressing the adult basic
literacy/education needs of women; OR c) includes some form of
curriculum design or programming that directly addresses the gender-based
societal issues experienced by women. WE LEARN welcomes as members
all literacy/ABE, social service, justice-seeking, and community-based
programs that serve women in some way.

Since
1987, Mercy Learning Center has provided
basic literacy and life skills to low-income women in
the greater Bridgeport area. As the motto of Mercy Learning
Center, "Educate a woman...Educate a family,"
clearly demonstrates, the mission of the Center is to
bring about a positive change to the problem of illiteracy;
specifically, to provide basic literacy and life skills
training using a "holistic" approach within
a compassionate, supportive community. |

The
vast number of students at 1199 Training and Upgrading
Fund (unionized nursing home workers) are immigrant
women. They take our classes (literacy, high school diploma,
transition to college, creative writing), and are very
motivated. They are also overworked and often mistreated
on the job. Our/their interests cover a range of areas
from educational to political. |

Women's Mentoring Network (WMN) is a non-profit,
career, educational, and personal resource that promotes
permanent financial independence for economically and
socially disadvantaged women and their families.
Family economic stability fosters positive life expectations;
building positive life expectations in parents as well
as their children, is the most effective strategy to break
the cycle of generational poverty and consequently, is
the most effective strategy against homelessness, hunger
and social disorder. |

Expanded
Horizons is a gender-specific program designed
to meet the learning needs of women and reduce the barriers
to access such as child care, transportation and scheduling.
The program addresses many types of literacy needs, such
as reading, writing, math, computer skills, GED preparation
and life skills such as financial and health literacy.
Participants work with a corps of trained volunteer tutors,
individually and in small classes to create individual
learning plans to help them meet their goals. |

Rosie’s
Place, a sanctuary for poor and homeless women,
offers both emergency and long-term assistance to women
who have nowhere else to turn. Established in 1974,
Rosie’s Place is committed to welcoming each guest
with respect and unconditional love. Rosie’s
Place accepts no government funds, and relies instead
on committed volunteers and private supporters to accomplish
its effective and innovative work. |

In 1986, The Care Center opened its doors
to provide counseling and support to pregnant and parenting
teens in the city of Holyoke. Soon after a GED program
was added and the program has grown and evolved to continue
to meet the needs of teen mothers in this city. Four main
programs are currently held under the umbrella of The
Care Center -- The Care Center Education Program for Pregnant
and Parenting Teens; Rowing Strong, Rowing Together; The
Clemente Course in the Humanities; and The Teen Resource
Project. |

Genesis Center serves up to 500 individuals and
seventy-four daycare families annually from more than

self-sufficiency of our clients depends primarily on access
to essential life skills and occupational/job skills training
