updated June, 2006
We
invite WE LEARN members -- learners, educators, and all advocates for
women -- to become involved in the work of WE LEARN. We look forward to
your participation.
New
Projects
In September
of 2006, we will begin our work to produce Issue 2 of the Women's
Perspectives Writing Initiative series. Here's what we need:
To get involved, contact Mev
Miller / 401-383-4374 / welearn@litwomen.org
*** In addition to sending their writing for consideration, ABE students
are invited and strongly encouraged to participate in all aspects of this
publication. ***
Work
Groups
WE LEARN work
groups are open to all members who would like to join in the fun and affect
the work of WE LEARN. You may live anywhere in the U.S. or Canada. We
try to meet face-to-face whenever possible, especially for people located
in close regional areas. However, much of our work is accomplished
through email and telephone conferencing.
To
get involved, contact Mev Miller / 401-383-4374 / welearn@litwomen.org
Local
/ Regional Groups |
ABE
Student Leadership |
| We
encourage WE LEARN members to initiate connections with each other
in your own community and to develop projects that address the needs
of women's literacy in your local area.
WE
LEARN would like to support members to create regional WE LEARN
support / activity groups or advisory boards. Each
region should be flexible and creative in doing what best serves
the participants in their region.
We
are still in the process of creating these networking opportunities.
Please contact us for more information on how to get started! |
We
are committed to building the leadership capabilities of women in
adult basic/literacy education. ABE student alums are key participants
on this committee. We are seeking the participation of ABE students
and support from ABE educators. |
Conference
Planning |
Women's
Perspectives |
The
4th Annual WE LEARN (Net)Working Conference (2007) will be held
in Massachusetts (Boston area).
2007
Theme:
Learning from Women-Centered Literacy Programs.
The
committee is seeking local area participants for logistical &
fundraising support. Women's programs from across the U.S. and Canada
are encouraged to participate.
We
could also use help promoting the conference, and finding co-sponsors.
More
details about the conference will be available in early September
2006. The Call for Presenters will be ready on October.

here to see details of past conferences.
|
The
Women's Perspectives committee selects the annual theme for the
next issue based on input from the membership, develops the Call
for Writings and the accompanying lesson plan to stimulate pre-writings
activities, publicizes the initiative and recruits writers, and
selects the students writings to be awarded and published.
***
In addition to sending their writing for consideration, ABE students
are invited and strongly encouraged to participate in all aspects
of developing this publication. ***

Website
/ Curriculum |
Research
/ Policy |
We
are working to create a more interactive website space. Within the
next year, the website will be begin to have a new look, include
more resources for both students and teachers, provide links to
research and policy, and more…
We
are seeking volunteers with website design skills.
BUT
you do not need to have website design skills to participate on
this committee. There are plenty of opportunities for everyone
who is interested in curriculum design or resources development
to participate in a variety of activities on this committee. |
This
work group will explore gender-based differences in learning and
make recommendations about resources on policy, legislation, &
research links to add to our website. They have identified a number
of research topics to explore.
Graduate
students are especially encouraged to join this committee as a source
of support for your own research pursuits related to women in ABE. |
Fundraising |
Board
of Directors & Advisory Council |
| We've
been able to move steadily forward with limited funds, but let's face
it, we could do more and become more effective with a stronger income
base. Do you know how to develop successful fundraisers? Have you
had a high success rate for the grants you've written? Do you understand
fundraising strategies or have creative fundraising ideas and the
energy to pursue them? WE LEARN invites you to help us build the financial
resources of WE LEARN to insure our sustainability. |
Would
you like to take on a stronger leadership role in WE LEARN? We are
always working to make our board representative of our constituents.
In the next year, we also plan to develop an Advisory Council as well.
